Background of the Study
Public transport accessibility is a critical factor influencing labor market efficiency, as it determines how easily workers can reach employment centers and how employers access a diverse labor pool. In Nigeria, improving public transport accessibility is seen as a strategy to reduce commute times, lower transportation costs, and enhance overall productivity (Adeniran, 2023). Modern public transport systems not only provide affordable mobility for low-income workers but also promote geographic integration in urban labor markets, thereby reducing regional disparities in employment opportunities (Olusola, 2024).
Accessible public transport can significantly improve job matching processes, reduce absenteeism, and increase workforce participation by making it easier for individuals to travel to and from work. Research indicates that cities with well-developed public transport networks tend to have higher levels of labor market efficiency and greater economic dynamism (Ibrahim, 2025). However, many Nigerian cities continue to face challenges such as inadequate service coverage, overcrowding, and poor interconnectivity among transit modes, which limit the potential benefits for the labor market (Chinwe, 2023).
This study examines the effect of public transport accessibility on labor market efficiency in Nigeria. By analyzing data on commute times, job accessibility, and employment rates, along with qualitative insights from employers and employees, the research aims to determine how improvements in public transport can facilitate better labor market outcomes. The study further explores policy measures that could enhance the reach and effectiveness of public transit systems, thereby promoting a more efficient and inclusive labor market.
Statement of the Problem
Despite efforts to improve public transport accessibility in Nigerian cities, significant challenges remain that hinder labor market efficiency. Inadequate transit networks, limited service hours, and overcrowding contribute to long and unpredictable commute times, which negatively impact worker productivity and job satisfaction (Uche, 2023). These issues lead to reduced labor market participation and create obstacles for employers seeking to recruit and retain talent. Additionally, the fragmentation of public transport services across urban areas results in inconsistent accessibility, where some neighborhoods enjoy reliable transit options while others are underserved (Afolabi, 2024).
The inefficiencies in public transport accessibility not only raise the cost of commuting but also contribute to broader economic inefficiencies by reducing overall workforce productivity. This situation is particularly detrimental in a rapidly urbanizing country like Nigeria, where the demand for effective labor mobility is critical for sustaining economic growth (Ibrahim, 2025). Furthermore, the lack of comprehensive planning and integration among different transit modes exacerbates these challenges, leading to missed opportunities for enhancing labor market outcomes. This study seeks to identify the key factors affecting public transport accessibility and examine their impact on labor market efficiency in Nigeria, with the goal of proposing practical policy interventions that can address these issues.

Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study focuses on major Nigerian cities with existing public transport systems. Limitations include data inconsistencies, regional differences in transit provision, and the challenge of isolating the impact of public transport from other economic variables.
